THE TERRITORY
SELINUNTE
Unlike Segesta where visitors are struck by a single large building.
Selinunte astounds visitors with its many ruined temples scattered over the land...
The temples in Selinunte are identified with letters of the alphabet because it has never been possible to identify the god they were dedicated to.
Among the eastern temples the largest is temple G probably consecrated to Apollo, the god who protected the city. Today it is only possible to see one of the 46 columns which comprised it.
Temple E has been reconstructed recently with its 38 columns and part of the cella walls.
Some of the bas reliefs which decorated to cella are housed in the Museo Archeologico in Palermo.
Inside the open space of the Acropolis are the remains of Temples O and A along with 12 columns from temple C, the oldest and most grandiose of the Acropolis (4th century BC).
